Due to its high cost of production and limited supplies after the Une Conflict, the PMS-P00SMS Gryphon that had been in use by the Preventers was relegated to ace pilots and commanders of the newly formed Earth Defense Organization, as the unit was deemed too advanced for the common soldier. Many of these would be customized by their pilots in some manner, often in the form of a customized paint job. One such unit belonging to EDO pilot Chad Dunstable, better known as the Crimson Meteor for his blazing fighting style would be given the pilot's favored brilliant red paint job, as well as a double beam cannon in place of the Gryphon's usual small single-barrel gun. The mobile suit was also tuned to Chad's preferences, boosting the Gryphon's already impressive mobility still further.
