Near the outbreak of the Venusian conflict, the Preventers began development on a mobile suit to serve as a testbed for a revolutionary new pilot interface system, the Neurological Uplink Control Unit. By using specially adapted neurological and sensory taps, a pilot using this system could in theory control a mobile suit as a physical extension of his or herself, the suit responding faster than conventional pilot interface systems, and possibly faster than a ZERO system equipped mobile suit, since the delay associated with a "twin-sticks and foot pedals" control system is eliminated.

After the PNUCU-01 was damaged in the Une Conflict, Mariemaia insisted on helping design the upgraded PNUCU-02, customizing the suit to her tastes and bringing it up to full combat potential. Featuring combat-worthy armor and improved boosters and manuvering systems, as well as a better flight unit for the backpack, the "Zero-Two Custom" could easily outmanuver mass-produced suits being fielded by Earth and Venus. The suit's armament was also improved, swapping the shoulder vulcans for more powerful machinecannons and adding medium-range beam scissors and a shield equipped with a beam gun. The suit retained its original melee capabilities and improved on them with the addition of a pair of large beam "talons" mounted in each forearm, and making the double glaive part of its standard armament. Inspired by Treize's Tallgeese II from the Eve Wars, the suit was given a white and blue paint job instead of the drab white "prototype" colors of the PNUCU-01. Mariemaia would make good use of this unit throughout the Venusian conflict.
