The 'Dirty Little Secrets'
of Anime
Ever wonder what they're hiding
from the viewers? The backstage secrets of your favorite shows? We've got
some ideas of what's going on behind the scenes, and we're splurging it
like tabloids. Got some dirt on a character? Feel free to share!
Now, in NO order AT all, what they DON'T want
you to KNOW!
~ Lina Inverse. Slayers. She actually had
to get breast reductions to get the part.
~ Heero Yuy. Gundam Wing. Suffers a perpetual
wedgie. Plans to sue the costume designer for giving him spandex shorts.
(Why do you think he changed to jeans in Endless Waltz?)
~ Duo Maxwell. Gundam Wing. Notice in
Endless Waltz he didn't have his preacher collar? He's really Jewish, and
after the series, he was tired of wearing it, and threatened to sue the
character designers and costume designers with Heero.
~ Umi, Fuu, Hikaru. Magic Knight Rayearth.
All three of them are anorexic.
~ Naga the Serpent. Slayers. They're fake.
~ Gourry Gabriev. Slayers. He's a major
in quantum physics. Already has a degree in mathematics.
~ Xellos Metallium. Slayers. He's really
a girl. Yep. You heard us.
~ Ranma Saotome. Ranma 1/2. He's actually
a girl cursed to turn into a guy. Made filming awkward.
~ Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn. Sailor Moon.
She's actually Xellos's twin sister. (You couldn't tell by the hair and
eye colors?)
~ Vegita. Dragonball Z. Dyes his hair
regularly to hide graying hair.
~ Nakago. Fushigi Yuugi. This blond, blue-eyed,
and to some people, bishounen, guy tried out for the part of Zechs Merquise
in Gundam Wing, however, he only managed to get a part as the stunt double.
~ Tasuki. Fushigi Yuugi. While portrayed
as a 'hammer' in the anime and manga, Tasuki is actually an olympic champion
swimmer. He tried to get some roles in milk ads, but since the anime and
manga made it clear he was allergic to milk, he was unable to show in them.
~ Miaka Yuuki. Fushigi Yuugi. Regularly
exchanges hair style tips with Lady/Colonel Une. (THE BUNS DIDN'T GIVE
IT AWAY TO YOU!? Sheesh. Lucky for you, we're here to tell you! ^.~)
~ Chidori Kuruma. Ayashi no Ceres. Yes,
she really is the result of a genetic engineering experiment with Chibi-Usa
(Rini) and Chiriko.
~ Gokou. Dragonball/Z. Is actually a stunning
redhead. It takes six hours to afix his wig/helmet for the day's filming.
(What, you think that hair style is natural?)
~ Wufei Chang. Gundam Wing. It takes 20
bottles of hair gel and rubber cement to get his hair back into that tiny
ponytail and so shiny. (You don't want to know how much they have to use
on Trowa's hair.)
~ Zechs Merquise and Quatre Raberba Winner.
Gundam Wing. Both have to bleach their hair regularly or their roots will
show. Zechs' is actually a lovely shade of golden brown, while Quatre's
is jet black. It takes a lot of bleach.
~ Talpa. Ronin Warriors. Actually has
a strange fetish for lemons.
~ Tamahome, Yui Hongo. Fushigi Yuugi.
Despite what the anime and manga say, ever since they met on the set, it's
been almost impossible to get them off each other.
~ Nuriko. Fushigi Yuugi. The anime and
manga say Nuriko is a guy pretending to be a girl, but Nuriko is actually
a girl. It was hard editting the shirtless scenes.
~ (Little) Washuu. Tenchi Muyo, etc. Is
actually a struggling actress trying to pay her way through high school
still.
~ Project A-ko names. A-ko's real name
is actually C-ko. B-ko's name is actually D, and C-ko's name is actually
B-ko. D is actually named A-ko. The directors thought it would be fun to
scramble the names. Chaos on the set was not uncommon.
~ Relena Peacecraft. Gundam Wing. We all
think she's a pacifist, right? Then what was she doing at the L.A. riots
in 1992 before she was cast as our pacifistic world leader?
~ Zelgadis Greywers. Slayers. Actually
has a skin condition that the make up crew put to good use. They covered
his warts with purple/blue make up.
~ Himura Kenshin. Rurouni Kenshin. The
red hair is actually a wig, he really has short dark (very dark) brown
hair. Has stunt doubled for Wufei Chang in the duels. Speaking of Wufei...
~ Wufei Chang. Gundam Wing. A) Doesn't
know a thing about sword play and B) Plays Tenchi Masaki in Tenchi in Toyko
since the previous actor refused to be in such a stupid sequel.
~ Hotohori. Fushigi Yuugi. Is actually
Laguna's (from FF8) twin brother.
~ Laguna. Final Fantasy 8. Actually cramps
up when talking to women, so the directors had to work it into the plot,
or find a new Laguna. Unfortunately, Hotohori suffers the same problem,
so they could not hire him instead.
~ Sasami. Tenchi Muyo, etc. Tried out
for the role of Chibi-Usa, but was turned down because her eyes were too
large.
~ Tenkou. Fushigi Yuugi. YES! One has
been saying it all along! Tenkou is related to Sephiroth, in fact, he's
actually Sephiroth's father. It's unclear as to who the mother is. One
says "Seppy-chan must get the better part of his looks from his mother
though."
~ Cloud Strife. Final Fantasy 7. Stunt
doubles for 'Super Saiya-jins' on Dragonball Z. His hair is actually naturally
spikey and blond.
~ Amelia Wil Tesla Sailoon. Slayers. Bleached
her hair and was cast for the role of Millie in Lost Universe.
~ Zechs Merquise. Gundam Wing. Tried out
for the role of Char Aznable in the original Gundam, however, he failed
to get the part. Years later her returned to take the role as the Lightning
Count in Gundam Wing, leaving Nakago to play only his stunt double.
~ Trowa Barton. Gundam Wing. Deathly afraid
of clowns. He had be heavily sedated to film scenes where he was wearing
the mask. That's why he has that spaced out look when Catherine is throwing
knives at him.
~ Mamoru/Darien/Tuxedo Mask/Kamen. Sailor
Moon. Is severely allergic to roses. He had to be rushed to the hospital
several times after filming due to near fatal allergic reactions. (Which
was why he never stuck around long in the early episodes) Eventually, they
resorted to fake roses, which worked wonders for their budget.
~ Miaka Yuuki (Fushigi Yuugi) and Lady/Colonel
Une (Gundam Wing). Both have been sighted cosplaying as Princess Leia
from Star Wars at various Sci-fi conventions.
~ Ryoko, Tenchi Muyo, etc. Tried out for
a role in Dragonball Z, and got quite angry when she was informed there
were no female saiya-jins in the show. She was arrested later for assualt
and battery when she demolished the set and put Vegita, Goku, Cloud Strife,
and the casting director in the hospital for months, all in extremely critical
condition.
~ Master Roshi. Dragonball/Z. Tried out
for the role of Howard in Gundam Wing, but was turned down because his
Hawaiian shirt was "not tacky enough" for the part.
~Kiyone. Tenchi Muyo!, etc. Actually has
an extensive criminal background, and is presently out on parole after
serving her latest sentence for robbing a Tokyo bank, carrying a concealed
weapon, and possessing illegal substances.
~Naga the White Serpent. Slayers. Had
to go through extensive speech lessons and therapy to
achieve that laugh.
~Tenchi Masaki. Tenchi Muyo!, etc. Stormed
out of the studio when he first read the script for Tenchi in Tokyo, and
refused to play the part, claiming that the new series was "A complete
waste of time and an insult to the original! They're just trying to cash
in on the original's success, but this is stupid, and if the fans are smart,
they'll spare themselves and not watch it." Unconfirmed rumors claim that
he later hired someone to sabotage the set. Ultimately, the part of Tenchi
Masaki in "Tenchi in Tokyo" was played by Wufei Chang of Gundam Wing fame.
~Ryo-ohki. Tenchi Muyo!, etc. Ryo-ohki
is the result of genetic experimentation that is banned in
most countries. She came to Japan after escaping
her birthplace (Iraq). She is highly intelligent, and
fluent in English, Japanese, French, Latin, and
Greek. She is not happy with her role in the Tenchi
series as an adorable little cabbit who's mostly
good for space transport. She unsuccessfully tried to
convince the directors to give her character
a more intelligent role in the show, and instead, was
given the cabbit-mecha form in Tenchi in Tokyo.
Ryo-ohki is, to say the least, dissatisfied with the
situation.
~Martina. Slayers. Idolizes Treize Khushrenada,
who has since gotten a restraining order in a vain
attempt to get rid of her. She stalks him, writes
love letters to him, calls him all the time, sometimes
late at night. She has been arrested 4 times
for violating the restraining order, 2 times for disturbing
the peace (when she tried to spy on him getting
ready for bed and fell two stories, breaking her leg
badly the first time, and cracking a rib the
second).
~Sanosuke. Rurouni Kenshin. Can't actually
heft a zanbatou one-handed. It's hollow and made of aluminum. They had
to replace the fake weapon several times because it would dent badly when
dropped.
~Shabranigdo. Slayers. Occasionally plays
the role of a giant monster in the Godzilla movies, but more often plays
the 'villain of the day' on Sailor Moon. He hates those weird costumes,
but is desperate for the money.
~Beryl. Sailor Moon. She is desperately
in love with Prof. Tomoe, however, the mad scientist is not interested,
instead having eyes only for Dorothy Catalonia from Gundam Wing.
~Dorothy Catalonia. Gundam Wing. Those
eyebrows are fake. It takes 2 hours for the glue and
makeup to be applied and then set for the day's
filming.
~Vegita. Dragonball Z. Plans to join Heero
in suing the costume design firm that gave them both
spandex, and thus, perpetual wedgies.
~The women of Dragonball/Z. The women
of DB/Z staged a walkout strike to protest sexist content on the show.
Desperate to proceed without having to drastically alter the show, the
Freiza battle was dragged out as long as possible in an effort to wear
down the strikers. Ultimately, the producers agreed to add a female fighter
to the show, hence the addition of Juuhachi-gou (Android #18), in the Cell
Saga.
~Freiza. Dragonball Z. This guy has got
to be the highest-paid character on the show. He almost
didn't take the part because he would have to
fight naked throughout a large part of battle, (plus when the women started
their strike, Freiza's role suddenly became much longer on the show) but
the producers, desperate to have him on the show, offered him heaps of
money to play the part. It takes nearly 10 hours to do his full-body makeup
(including the putty-like substance used over his
genitals). His tail is fully animatronic, controlled
by tiny remotes planted in his hands, as well as by a
remote group of operators for certain complex
sequences.
~Phibrizo. Slayers. After his short role
on the show ended, Phibrizo decided to follow his dream of acting in a
sci-fi series. A solid, serious, hard-core, spaceships flying, aliens shooting,
science fiction anime. He ended up instead playing the part of Jim on Outlaw
Star.
~Valgaav. Slayers. Is part of a fledgling
boy-band called Bish. The group is only a year old, but is rapidly developing
a female fan base.
~Mirai no Trunks. Dragonball Z. This purple
haired bishounen from the future, known simply as mirai Trunks or Future
Trunks, along with his buddy Valgaav, got together with some other guys
and decided to form a band. The group was called Bishounen, shortened quickly
to Bish, and the two guys began recruiting.
~Chiriko. Fushigi Yuugi. This kid genius
of Fushigi Yuugi tried out for the role of Jim Hawking of Outlaw Star.
He was turned down because "his eyes were too large".
~Canal. Lost Universe. Lost Universe was
filmed at the same studio as Outlaw Star. Eye-witnesses confirm that numerous
"catfights" about space ships have broken out between Canal and Melfina.
~Harry. Outlaw Star. Speaking of Canal,
there are unconfirmed rumors of her possibly being related to Harry. They
have the same eye and hair color, and neither are quite human. In the event
these are confirmed, we'll let you know.
~Pikachu. Pokemon. This rodent apparently
tried out for the role of Ryo-ohki in the ever popular Tenchi series, however,
after demonstrating its powers, the casting director had to be rushed to
E.R. As you can gather, Pikachu was not given the part.
~Tomo. Fushigi Yuugi. Yes, he's weird
in Fushigi Yuugi, however, according to various secret sources, Tomo is
a fully trained Shakespearean actor. There are also unconfirmed rumors
about a fling with Soi.
~Suboshi/Amiboshi. Fushigi Yuugi. Twins?
Think again. Suboshi and Amiboshi are played by the same actor. Yuuhi,
of Ayashi no Ceres. Filming scenes with the 'twins' together were quite
difficult. |
