Technical and Historical Notes
In preparation of the
expected conflict with Venus, Mars governor Milliardo Peacecraft, with
funding from the Winner Corporation, secretly designed and built
several new Gundams to meet the threat. Prototype Mobile Suits, Inc,
already well regarded by the governor for their refit of his Tallgeese
mobile suit, was again hired to
design and help build these new Gundams. One of the first units
completed was the PMS-MDC-01T Gundam Typhoon.
Easily the heaviest of the new suits, the Typhoon was equipped with a
Vernier flight system to help compensate for the extra mass. Unlike the
Tallgeese or the Gryphon however, the
Typhoon cannot truly fly under its own power, but it can for the most
part outmanuver most mobile suits on the ground or in space. It was
intended largely for fire support, with most of its weapons consisting
of traditional explosive ordinance instead of fancy beam weapons. For
close-range defense it mounted a dual set of head vulcan cannons, and
could carry a pair of beam scimitars into combat. Its most unique and
devastating weapon though, was the Typhoon cannon mounted in its
shield, a powerful sprayer that deployed a particularly corrosive acid.
Fully loaded, the Typhoon carried roughly as much firepower as the
original Gundam Heavyarms, boasting a total of 48 missiles, two beam
gattlings, and a pair of large missiles intended for taking out
battleships.
Heero Yuy's son Yoshino was selected from among the Preventers to go to
Mars and take command of the Typhoon. Though unhappy with the decision,
the Typhoon would become Yoshino's personal unit throughout almost all
of the fighting in AC 216 and AC 217.
